| Friends in Time was founded as a nonprofit agency in 1993 and in July 2002, became a program of Adelante. Joining forces with Adelante, a larger agency with a similar mission, allowed Friends in Time to focus more directly on its program participants. Whereas Adelante focuses on helping people with disabilities achieve their goals, Friends in Time is specifically helping people with chronic neuromuscular diseases, like multiple sclerosis and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.
Friends in Time is the only nonprofit program providing hands-on services to people with neuromuscular diseases in Bernalillo, Sandoval, and Valencia counties. The program services are very important because many people are overwhelmed by the diagnosis, symptoms, and physical and cognitive limitations of neuromuscular diseases. They often fall between the gaps in our medical and social services and don’t know where to turn. Friends in Time is here to fill those gaps and help families adapt their homes and lives to the disease, in order to allow each person to maintain as much independence as possible. Volunteers play an important role in the program doing group projects and serving as one-on-one ‘friends’ for program participants. To learn more about volunteering, contact the Friends in Time manager. If you are interested in donating durable medical equipment, call to find out the kinds of items we can use. If you would like to make a financial donation to Friends in Time or Adelante, visit the agency's donation page and you can do so online. If you or someone you care about has MS or ALS, be sure to check this website for Friends in Time services, events and outings, community resources, assistive technology, support groups, and general information on MS and ALS.
