Friends in Time was founded by Michael Gray and Foster Hall, who met and became friends in 1983, two years after Foster was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. Foster was told he would die from the disease within six months, but when Michael met him, Foster was at a party getting out of his wheelchair to dance with his wife. Michael was impressed at Foster's determination to enjoy life to the fullest, regardless of his prognosis, and the positive atmosphere Foster had created in his home and life to work around his disease.

In 1993, Michael and Foster teamed up to help others with ALS. They used their combined resources, their friendship, and Foster's first-hand knowledge of what it's like to have a neuromuscular disease to form Friends in Time. They served as advocates, set up adaptive equipment, and linked people who had ALS to available resources and services. In 1994, Friends in Time began to support people with multiple sclerosis.

In July 2002, Friends in Time became a program of Adelante Development Center. Joining forces with Adelante, a larger agency with a similar mission, allowed Friends in Time to focus more directly on its program participants.
