The phrase “home is where the heart is” describes the understanding that universally, people want the place they live to be a welcoming, comfortable haven where they can be themselves.

It is a major milestone when a person moves out of their parents’ home. Whether they have roommates or live alone; it’s a place to call their own.

For many years, this opportunity was denied people with disabilities. Their choices involved either continuing to live with their families or being placed in an institution. Fortunately, Adelante, and agencies like ours, are expanding those options for people with disabilities.

Adelante’s Community Living program gives people with disabilities a variety of opportunities and care levels to meet the needs of each individual. Supported Living, Independent Living, and Home-Based services are available, and home ownership is also an option.

Community integration is a key part of Adelante’s Community Living program. The homes involved are not set apart, but are parts of established, friendly neighborhoods. Adelante promotes community interaction and understands that having contact with people with disabilities and forming bonds with other community members raises awareness and lessens stereotypes and misunderstandings about people with disabilities. The Community Living program allows people with all levels of disability to live their lives to the fullest and to be as much a part of the community as they choose. Serving as advocates for and supporting the goals of people with disabilities are the main reasons Adelante operates as a nonprofit agency. Our Community Living program meets the needs of our participants where they live.
