Adelante offers a wide variety of programs. More information on each of them can be viewed from the links to the left. The agency works cooperatively with case managers, guardians, parents to develop the right mix of services for each person. You can view a list of services and locations, learn more information through this website, or contact Adelante’s main location to ask questions or arrange for a tour of the programs in your area of interest.

Most of Adelante’s services were developed for and are available to people who have developmental disabilities, including people who have developmental disabilities and also have mental disabilities or illnesses. People who have mental illness, but do not have developmental disabilities usually receive community-based supported employment services, which are available through Adelante Employment Services. In addition, people who have disabilities other than DD or mental illness may be able to receive these services. Adelante’s Friends in Time program is designed for people with chronic neuromuscular diseases, specifically multiple sclerosis (MS) and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS or Lou Gehrig’s disease). Paying for Services

Though Adelante is a nonprofit agency, we must cover our expenses to remain in operation. There are fees associated with receiving most of our services. Funding is available through the New Mexico Department of Health (DOH), the Division of Vocational Rehabilitation (DVR), grants, trusts, insurance, private pay, or other sources.

DD Waiver & State General Funds

The New Mexico Department of Health has a program called the DD Waiver Program that will pay for most of Adelante's support services, but the State has a very long waiting list for this kind of funding. To qualify, the person must be found eligible by the Metro Regional Office of the Long-Term Services Division of the Department of Health.

Some people who have developmental disabilities may get funding through the Department of Health's State General Funds for Adelante's Employment Services, Community Options, or Assisted Living Services. You must prove eligibility through the Metro Regional Office of the DOH. (Check with Al Friedman at 341-2000 to find out who may receive services under the State General Funds). The waiting list for this form of funding is relatively short.

Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for funding through the DOH DD Waiver Program or the State General Funds, a person must document the following for the Metro Regional Office of the Long-Term Services Division of the Department of Health:

1. A physical and/or mental disability (not including a mental illness) must have appeared before the person's 22nd birthday; and
2. The disability must be expected to last indefinitely
3. The disability must substantially interfere with the person's ability to function in at least 3 of the following areas of life:
   • Self care
   • Communication
   • Mobility
   • Learning
   • Working
   • Being self-directing
   • Living independently
4. The disability must include either mental retardation, cerebral palsy, epilepsy, autism sprectrum disorder, or a similar syndrome or condition.

We have simplified the wording of these criteria to make them easier to understand. For the official wording and to apply for both State General Funds and the DD Waiver Program, contact the Metro Regional Office at 841-5500. You must file two separate applications when applying for state funding for DD services. The Metro Regional Office can explain the process.
